Check the program's communication method first
Donor support is voluntary and non-repayable, but direct contact with a donor is not part of every scholarship. In some programs, communication is handled through the institution; in others, limited contact may be allowed under conditions set by the institution.
- Use only the communication channel expressly designated by the institution or program.
- Do not use or share a donor's personal phone number, email address, or social media details without the institution's direction.
- Direct questions about the scholarship amount, duration, payment schedule, or continuation conditions to the institution managing the scholarship, not the donor.
- Do not attempt to contact a donor if the institution has not provided an authorized means of communication.
Not every scholarship program provides direct donor contact. Do not use a donor's private contact details without institutional guidance. Be sincere, measured, and clear when contact is permitted
If the program permits donor communication, you may thank the donor and share, at appropriate intervals, how the support contributes to your education. Short, sincere, and informative messages are sufficient.
What can you share?
- Positive developments and academic progress in your education,
- How the support contributes to your budgeting or education,
- Your future educational and career goals,
- When appropriate, a brief greeting and message of thanks on holidays or at the new year.
How often should you communicate?
Follow the schedule set by the institution. If there is no stated schedule, contact the donor only when there is a meaningful update and at reasonable intervals; do not send repeated or overly frequent messages.
Communication guidelines
Respect mutual boundaries and personal space
- Use respectful and thoughtful language.
- Do not ask a donor for money, gifts, employment, references, or personal assistance outside the program.
- Do not direct complaints about the scholarship amount or requests for additional support to the donor; contact the institution when necessary.
- Listen respectfully and avoid an argumentative, insistent, or accusatory tone.
- Avoid questions about sensitive matters such as religion, politics, and private life.
- Do not communicate in a way intended to evoke pity, exert pressure, or manipulate emotions.
- Do not ask the donor to select or support you directly for the next period.
- If an interaction is inappropriate or makes you uncomfortable, stop the exchange and notify the institution managing the scholarship.
Scholarship continuation
Good communication does not guarantee support in the next period
The amount, duration, and continuation conditions are governed by the relevant program rules. Continuation may depend on the program requirements, the recipient's continued eligibility, the availability of funding, and the assessment of the institution managing the scholarship.
Direct questions about payment, amount, duration, renewal, or continuation decisions to the institution, not the donor. If donor support ends, the institution determines the next steps under the program conditions.
